I finished reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. While reading i wrote some quotes that reflected on resolution.
"They will not know i have gone away to come back. For the ones i left behind. For the ones who cannot out." Esperanza decides that she wants to leave mango street. But she still wants to come back and visit. This really reflects on resolution and childhood. When you are a child your lost and do not know where you belong. When you grow up you find your true meaning g in life. Sometimes to find your true meaning in life you need to go some where else and explore life. Esperanza found her true meaning when she decided that she needed to leave mango street. There are other people just like Esperanza trying to find there way in life, and when they find it cannot escape. So, Esperanza makes sure that when she leaves she will return for those people and her family. This Quote relates to everyone because i am sure that all of us feel like we are out of place sometimes.
"i am too strong for her to keep me here forever. One day i will go away." In this quote Esperanza again talks about leaving mango street. How mango street wants her to stay but she has already made up her mind. When Esperanza and everyone in general is young they are weak, their mind set is week. But when you grow older it's different. You experience things that make you question life and make you stronger. Esperanza witnessed a lot of scary things and went through a lot of experiences that shaped the person she is today. And with all she went through came the strength she gained to leave mango street.
In conclusion, resolution is something we all go through. Through resolution we figure out who we are and we gain strength we never had. Everybody goes through resolution to make them the person they are today.

Crank for Middle School?
I finished reading Crank by Ellen Hopkins. I thought it was an excellent book. While reading the book my teacher asked me a question, do you think this book is appropriate for middle school students? I have formed an conclusion, yes.
I think that this book is in fact appropriate for middle school students. I don't see the bad in it, it actually shows you all the horrific things that come of crank. So it's making you aware of the consequences that come from crank. Kristina ruined her whole life. She ruined her family relationship, the people in her family and her academics. This all went down hill because of crank. This book opens your eyes to things that are out in the world that sometimes we are not aware of. When you read this book you say "wow, i am never ever going to try crank."Crank makes you do things you would never dream of doing. Due to drugs Kristina cursed at her mother, lowered her school grades, skipped classes, got pregnant, and hurt her family. When you look at all of this you know that this book tells you never do this drug unless you want to end up like Kristina. So yes this book in my opinion is appropriate for middle school students.
In conclusion, i think that this book is appropriate for middle school students. It does not encourage anything. It shows that path you life goes if you try crank. I think it would actually be good for middle school students top read this so that they never make the mistake of doing drugs ever in their life. After all you only live once, why would you take that away with a drug?

Coming of age
I am reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. In this book Esperanza ( the main character) speaks about all of her life, both the good and the bad. While reading the book i noticed two quotes that responded to the coming of age experience.
"If you give me five dollars i will be your friend forever."When you are young the one thing you need is a friend. Someone you can confide in and spill your heart out to. They are the people that get you through your hard times, they are the ones who make you laugh when all you want to do is cry. I do think it is important to have a friend. If you don't have a friend you feel lonely and confined. When you see all the other kids that have friends and you don't it makes matters worse. So when someone asks Esperanza for five dollars and in return she will be her friend, she takes the bribe. I can understand why she did it, if i didn't have any friends, maybe i would even do it.
"And i wish my name was Cassandra or Alexis or Maritza- anything but Esperanza- but when i tell them my name they don't laugh." This shows me a lot about Esperanza as a person. She feels like her name and her self are to good enough. She feels like she would be better as some one else. When you are young, you look at other people and you say, why can't i be like her? Why can't i have her hair? You envy others because of what they have and you don't. But when you grow up, you learn to except yourself as who you are. You know that you should't change anything about yourself because you are perfect the way you are.
In conclusion, both quotes i chose speak into the coming of age experience. Both show what you think and do while you are young.

The Capitol
In the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins the capitol (Panem) is unfair. They don't care about anyone but theme selves.
One reason i think that they only care about theme selves is because of the hunger games. They made that up just so they can keep the districts in order. They let innocent people die every year. They really couldn't care less. Because if they did this wouldn't be happening. Kids as young as 12 wouldn't be in the hunger games fighting for their life that eventually would be taken from them. It's a cruel way to keep the districts in order i don't think it's fair. There must be another way, instead of taking 24 kids and making them fight for their life. Every year 23 kids die and only one gets the chance to claim victory in a cruel way, by murdering each other. This can't be the only way, this is a cruel and disgusting thing to do.
Another reason i think that the capitol only cares about them selves is because they treat others as if they were nothing. For example, "What's an Avox?" i ask stupidly." Someone who committed a crime. They cut her tongue so she can't speak,"says Haymitch. "And even if you did, you're not to speak to one of them unless it's to give an order."says Effie. When i first read these lines i was shocked. They treat these people horribly as if they weren't even human beings. They cut out there tongue because they committed a crime. They are not supposed to speak just do orders for others. No one should be treated like that. The capitol doesn't really care about someone else's life but they do care about themeselves. They really don't car that someones tongue is being cut out because after all, it's just there servant and nothing more.
In conclusion the capitol only cares about them selves. They don't care about the lives taken or about the humanity stripped from the servants, all that matters is them.

Role model's
There are many different people i look up to in life. All because of there actions and qualities. While i was reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins i noticed a very important role model, Katniss. I think Katniss is a great role model.
One way i think Katniss is a great role model is because she is willing. For example,"you can opt to add your name more times in exchange for tesserae." "Each tesserae is worth a meager year's supply of grain and oil for one person.""So now, at the age of sixteen, my name will be in the reaping twenty times."Katniss is willing to risk her life for her family. By putting in her name twenty times she has a good chance of being called to fight to death. But since it is for her family she does it anyway. Her name was only supposed to be in the reaping five times. But she needed grain and oil for her family so she put it in fifteen more times just so her family can be well fed. I think it's a big job that Katniss takes, taking care of the family considering she is basically acting like the mother of the family, when she is only sixteen.
Another way i think Katniss is a great role model is because she is courageous. For example,"I volunteer!" I gasp. "I volunteer as tribute!"Katniss basically is telling them that she is willing to die for her sister Prim, who was the original name that was called. Katniss didn't want her sister to have to fight in the hunger games. So she took her place instead. Even though she knows that it is a gruesome place and not may people survive. She is willing to have her life taken away from her for her family. I think she is the most courageous person i have ever met.
In conclusion. I think Katniss is a great role model. She is both willing and courageous. I think these two qualities sum up to a great person, Katniss.

Still i Rise
http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/still-i-rise/\
In the poem Still I Rise by Maya Angelou she talks about all the things someone does to her but after that she rises. This shows me that the theme of her poem is even if someone knocks you down you should get back up.
Maya Angelou is one of my favorite poets. A lot of her poems are encouraging like this one. In this poem she tells people that when you fall you should get back up. For example, "You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies,You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise." Maya Angelou says you can say all these lies about me and trample me in the dirt but i will still get back up. To me she is very encouraging she tells the reader that even when someone does all of these horrific things to her she can still get back up, she won't let them win. Another example of this is , "You may shoot me with your words,You may cut me with your eyes,You may kill me with your hatefulness,But still, like air, I'll rise." Maya Angelou tells us that no matter how many things are thrown at her, it doesn't matter because she won't back down, she will rise. Even when hate itself is thrown at her and she falls she gets back up. It Doesn't matter if most of her is aching to give up she has to rise up from the ground.
In conclusion, the theme of Maya Angelou's poem is that if someone knocks you down you should get back up. When you think about it we all fall down sometimes but the trick is to get back up because if you stay on the ground you will never get anywhere. If you feel like giving up don't, in the end it's all worth it, because you have your future ahead of you and in the end you will go on with no regrets.

Phenomenal woman
http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/phenomenal-woman/
In the poem Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou she speaks about herself with confidence and dignity. This is what leads me to believe the theme of the poem is that you should be happy with who you are and what you look like.
Through out the poem Maya Angelou speaks about herself with confidence." I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size". She doesn't care about things like that. She says them to the reader to show that she isn't worried about what other people look like or what other people want her to look like. The key is to be happy with your self. It doesn't really matter what other people think because they are not you."They think I'm telling lies. I say,It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips,The stride of my step,The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman,That's me." Maya Angelou says that se doesn't have to fit the image of other people because she is a phenomenal person with her unique qualities. She shows the reader that its ok not to be one of those models from television because you are a phenomenal woman yourself that is the key for you to be happy.
In conclusion, Maya Angelou wanted the reader to be happy with who they are and what they looked like after reading this poem. All you need is a little confidence and dignity because the truth is we are all phenomenal woman.

Hoodies
I just finished reading an article called Hug a Hoodie: What the U.K. teaches us about making a sweatshirt a symbol. This article was about a teenage boy name Trayvon Martin who lost his life in february, because someone thought he was a threat, even though he was unarmed and just walking by. This article also teaches the reader about the symbol of the hoodies, well the many symbols it has. Because the truth is it can be different to all of us. Some of us might think it poses a threat, some might think it is to blend in, and maybe even to look cool. The author of the article wants us to know all the different meaning of hoodie. The author speaks about how a hoodie could be used or meant for different things. For example, in the U.K. the hoodie is "associated with low-income people up to no good."Some british say "it captures the medium's defiant posture."And some people just say They're a way to stay invisible in the street." Everyone has a different opinion about hoodies whether it is good or bad. I don't think anyone should be criticized because of something they wear and how they wear it. It's only clothes, right? It is not something to be judged for like our actions or sometimes the words we say. No one should be judged from the clothes they were. Its not like we are in kindergarten again. If someone wants to wear a hoodie, let them. It doesn't define who you are as a person. You should never judge a book by its cover, just like you shouldn't judge a person just because they are wearing a hoodie. Maybe they even have a reason for wearing it.But it doesn't really matter because it doesn't show who you really are, whether you are a good or bad person. |

Cleaning the streets
I just finished reading People are awesome "The wire"actress helps fix the real Baltimore. I found this article to be very interesting. It is about an actress (Sonja Sohn) who decides that she wants to clean up the streets of baltimore by decreasing the crime and violence. She founded "re-wire for a change" with some of her co-stars. This program cut down violence and crime by educating kids.
I think part of the theme of this article is that there i always something that can be fixed. The other part being if you really want something you can always achieve it. Sonja fixing baltimore by educating kids, this helped a lot with reducing crime and violence. I'm sure there are a lot of place that need this too but starting small is the first way of helping the environment. She is a very good example of someone who people around the world should look up to. Sonja wanted to help baltimore and in the end she prevailed, she ended up founding a company that helps kids.
I think that this was a great idea and more people should be influenced by her. She is a great role model. I think it is very important to have some determination and care for people like Sonja did. She cared for the people in Baltimore and because of this she was determined to help them. Both of these qualities make a great person.

Steering in the Wrong Direction
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the book Glass by Ellen Hopkins the main character Kristina has a big problem, she is addicted to drugs. Although she has already come out of the dark path here she goes again going through that path again. All she ever craves are the drugs and even though she knows that they are no good for her she just keeps coming back for more.
Kristina just came back from the dark path. From the dark path she came out but this time with a baby. She stopped the drugs for a while for the baby. Although it was hard for her to stop she tried very hard until she stopped. But soon enough she couldn't stop the cravings. She very well knows all the harm that could be done if she does drugs again, anything can happen but she seems to not care. She seems to care more about the drugs than her own child. Many consequences come from drugs and she knows how upset her family will be to know that she is doing drugs yet again.
Kristina has prevailed before and i believe she can prevail again. She has to stop ruining her life she is only 18 with a child. She needs to steer her life back onto the right direction and stop doing drugs. They are hurting her and her life. I believe that everyone can steer their life back into direction if they are determined. All you need is a little determination to get you on your feet again.

Romeo and Julliet
While watching the movie romeo and Julliet i figured out some observations. There were many observations i saw such as light, color, sound, and water. The one that interested me the most was color. This came up a lot through out the movie.
One of the first times i saw color was at the beginning of the movie when the Montagues and Capulets were talking. They both had two different colors. For example the Capulets wore red. This is to show their side. Another example is through out the movie most of the time Julliet is wearing white. I think this is to show that she is pure loving and cares. That is what white represents to me, something pure. Julliet is a pure and loving girl. This is why i think they chose white for her to wear. She wears white a lot. Her robe is whit and almost all of her dresses.
When the Capulets and the Montagues were about to fight i noticed that the Capulets were wearing dark colors and then later on they were also wearing dark colors. Both of these times they were wearing dark colors were when they were about to fight and something bad was about to happen. I think these dark colors represent tragic and bad things that are going to happen. When i think of something dark and bad i think of black because it is a dark color. When its dark you cant see anything so anything can happen .

Sisters forever always together
In my book Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma the main character Chloe and her sister Ruby have a great sisterly friendship. I think that they are a great example of how siblings should act toward one another. They support each other and love each other.
"Chloe could swim this whole thing, there and back".Ruby said this because she knows her sister can do it, she believes in her. Ruby believes in her sister 100% and i think that it is important to believe in your sibling. This makes them feel better about themselves and it shows your there for them. Chloe and Ruby are role models they show that your sibling is your best friend. The one you can lean on, the one that believes in you, and the one who you can come to in the hardest of times.
"Ruby tried to convince my dad.""She tried in all the ways she was used to trying: her eyes staring down until no light could escape and there was nowhere else to look but straight at her." When Chloe had to leave Ruby, she came right back to Chloe. The reason for that is because she missed her. When you spend most of your life taking care and loving your sibling, when they leave it is never the same again. Its like something out of place or missing. For example, " there's been no one to eat my baby corns". Ruby and Chloe would order from a place, when the ordered Chloe would eat the baby corns that Ruby didn't want. Imagine you did that with your sibling and when they leave you sit there staring at them knowing their going to be thrown out because your sibling is not there to eat them. That makes you miss them even more.

Field with Flowers Near Arles
I chose field with flowers near Arles by Vincent Van Gogh because it was a beautiful piece of art and I have a lot to say about it. I think that that picture is about how life is a pleasure and you should always live life to the fullest. You are never going to get that beautiful exact moment ever again so not only live life to the fullest but savor the moment and appreciate it.
The piece of artwork is very calm and relaxing. The scene is beautiful filled with a lot of trees, grass and flowers. This is a time where you would savor the moment because it’s almost perfect. This time where the grass is perfectly green and there is no one outside and the flowers look beautiful is never going to happen again so savor that moment. I mean sure you might go back to the same place with the same people but it will never be the same.
This work connects to me because I love nature. Not only that but it reminds me of my memories upstate. Where there would be tons and tons of acres of fresh green grass and a patch of beautiful flowers right near the house. It got me away from the polluted city to a fresh new place where I could relax and enjoy myself. I think every one needs to get away from the city and head to somewhere like Van Gogh’s artwork.

All star nomination
MY ALL STAR NOMINATION GOES TO...................... Joanna
http://readingfartoomuch.blogspot.com/2011/11/response-to-when-it-happens.html |
I read Joanna's post When it Happens and i loved it. She was fun and creative. Also, she added really good detail and opinion. Her post connected with me and made me read it over and over again. One of my favorite parts of her post was the beginning paragraph. She started by saying her weakness. But not just in any way, i felt like she was opening up to the reader and made the post very welcoming. She puts opinion and a tiny bit of advice and makes it very convincing.I loved Joanna's post.

"perfect"
In the book The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen Macy is dealing with the awful truth about life, that nothing lasts forever, not even our parents. She also deals with this truth hen her boyfriend tells her he wants to spend some time apart.
"It's just that . . . I just think that some things are meant to be broken. Imperfect. Chaotic. It's the universe's way of providing contrast, You know? There has to be a few holes in the road. It's how life is." I agree with this statement being imperfect is a fact tat we all have to deal with. No one is perfect. You can try as hard as you want but we all have our flaws. Our flaws are what make us who we are. They are what make us the person we are today, they build up our personality. If we didn't have flaws we wouldn't learn anything because by making mistakes we learn more and more.Everyone learns from their mistakes. For example, to ride a bike you need to fall at least once before you get the hang of it. As a baby you learn to walk and as an adult you can still trip.
"but if everything was always smooth and perfect,"she continued."you'd get too used to that, you know? you have to have a little it of disorganization now and then. Other wise, you'll never really enjoy it when things go right." I can't picture life without mistakes because i make them everyday. Now that i think about it if everything were right then after a while it will get boring. Everyone makes mistakes from putting the wrong answer on the test even though you knew the right one, to forgetting your homework at home. It happens, but there is nothing you can do about it.

Role Model
People have various Role models in life. In my book The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen Macy, the main character is a role model. She does things that make someone want to be just like her. People could look up to her due to her characteristics and actions.
One reason why i think that Macy is a role model is because she works hard and that shows me that with a little determination and hard work you can succeed."When i'd tell her i was studying, or doing some work for school, she'd exhale so loudly i'd have to hold the phone away from my ear". It's normal to me that she is doing homework on friday because maybe she wanted to get it over with but she is studying and i'm pretty sure she does not have a test on saturday. I think that she just works hard and wants to do well in school so she studies whenever she can to maintain good grades."So i'd swear that i was going out the next night, and then she'd tell me she loved me, and the i'd hang up and go back to my SAT book, or my ironing, or the paper that wasn't due for another two weeks."i'm pretty sure that most kids don't work on their paper two weeks before its due maybe a week to a week and a half before its due. Macy is just jam packing her self with things to do so that she is never left with nothing to do. To top it off these things aren't like watching television or playing video games they are actual work.
Another reason why i think Macy is a role model is because she is caring.she cares deeply for her family. For example, she speaks about her father a lot not only because he died but also because she cares. She talks about the memories she holds closest to her heart about him the ones that she treasures the most. She also cares for her sister "you're going to get in trouble.""Caroline."When her sister sneaks through her window during the night she tries to stop her because she doesn't want her to get hurt. When time passes by she starts to worry. All because she cares. How would you like her as a role model?
