In the poem Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou she speaks about herself with confidence and dignity. This is what leads me to believe the theme of the poem is that you should be happy with who you are and what you look like.
Through out the poem Maya Angelou speaks about herself with confidence." I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size". She doesn't care about things like that. She says them to the reader to show that she isn't worried about what other people look like or what other people want her to look like. The key is to be happy with your self. It doesn't really matter what other people think because they are not you."They think I'm telling lies. I say,It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips,The stride of my step,The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman,That's me." Maya Angelou says that se doesn't have to fit the image of other people because she is a phenomenal person with her unique qualities. She shows the reader that its ok not to be one of those models from television because you are a phenomenal woman yourself that is the key for you to be happy.
In conclusion, Maya Angelou wanted the reader to be happy with who they are and what they looked like after reading this poem. All you need is a little confidence and dignity because the truth is we are all phenomenal woman.
I think that your thesis fits the poem perfectly. I believe that what you make yourself is how others should judge you. No one can deny you that privilege. People should see the way you want them to see you.
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious that you really and truly care about this topic. Both you and Maya Angelou are correct when you both say that it doesn't matter what clothes one wears or the way one looks. It's really about how one sees themselves. It's great that you wrote about this topic that has a huge effect on our world today.
